Coonhound (short coat) : : Male : : Adult : : Large
Ben is a Coonhound/Pointer Mix who is approximately 3 years old. He was in Haven to Home's care after being found running loose on Route 15. He has been living in a home for 1 1/2 years, but is looking for a home with a bit more room to roam and a place where he can use his voice freely and not be constrained by "in-town" living.
Ben is a beautiful mix of the Coonhound and Pointer breeds. His voice is true hound and he uses his loud bark to signal excitement, happiness, eagerness, and when he feels he needs something like attention, a walk, dinner or a bone! He is extremely athletic and agile, easily twisting and jumping over anything in his way. He does "point" at times which is fun to see.
When he first started living in a home, he was crated, but did not do well with it. Instead, he does extremely well left free to roam during the workday. He is walked before work, has a potty break and some outside time at lunch, and another walk in the evening. He does very well during the day and only gets into trouble if something like a belt, golf glove, or shoe is left within reach. He has chewed those items in the past, but items made of leather or canvas are no longer left for him to "investigate."
At the end of an active day (walks, chew time with a bone and outside time), Ben is very happy to sleep on the couch right next to you and even tries to be a lap dog at times. He sleeps on the couch at nighttime and has to be woken up in the morning.
Ben has not been around small children, but seems to be ok with them when he meets them on walks after he has time to get over his excitement. He has not been around cats or small animals, but gets overly enthusiastic when he sees a duck, squirrel, or cat on his walks. He walks beautifully on a Head Halti when it's quiet and other dogs are not in the area. When another dog is, he jumps and bays and is quite a handful.
When off leash in a fenced backyard, Ben has been just fine with a Mini-Pinscher and a Cocker Spaniel who have visited. He loves his Lab brother and runs and plays with him in the backyard. When on leash walks, his excitement gets the best of him and opportunities to be introduced to other dogs are avoided.
The hope for Ben is that someone comes along who can offer a living situation that allows him to be free with his voice and provides ways to release his energy. He has not been left off leash for fear he will go on a "hunt," but someone with experience with hunting breeds may be able to train him to do so. He would be in heaven!
Ben is UTD on shots and is neutered. If you think Ben would make the perfect cuddling canine addition to your home please go to www.haventohome.org and complete a foster or adoption application.
